Become a bird-watching expert at The Birdwatchers Store in Slippery Rock, home to 3.5 acres of Audubon-certified wildlife sanctuary. Find fun in friendly competition at Mars-Bethel Golf’s mini-cornhole course (or their more traditional mini-golf). Plan an outdoor adventure with a visit to Buttermilk Falls! Walk the McFeely Trail to the 45-foot waterfall, situated in a 48-acre natural area. The property was once owned by Fred McFeely, grandfather of Mr. Fred Rogers of children’s television fame, who spent much of his childhood at the property. Take the stairs to enjoy an “up-close” view of the falls year-round (use caution & visit at your own risk). Continue your outdoor adventure with a bird watching outing! The Loyalhanna Dam is a local site for viewing bald eagles in their habitat and Yellow Creek State Park is an important rest stop for migrating birds, especially noted for its spring waterfowl migration! Nearby, Blue Spruce Park is known for excellent passerine migration. Bird watching is a fun year-round activity throughout the county! Perfect for adventurers of all ages is the Indiana County EcoTour GeoTrail. The Evergreen Conservancy created a series of 20 geocaches in the county, which in combination, make the Indiana County EcoTour GeoTrail. Adventure-goers can pick up a GeoTrail Passport from the Indiana County Tourist Bureau office and track their progress along the GeoTrail. After completion, the passports can be redeemed for a trackable, collectible coin at the bureau’s office. Visit an outdoor environmental education center at Tanoma Wetlands. This area includes a self-guided trail with signage about the water restoration process, an off-grid renewable energy system, and offers a pavilion with picnic tables. Explore the many waterways in Indiana County. Enjoy the calm lake waters at Yellow Creek State Park, or for more adventure take a kayak or canoe ride down the Conemaugh or Kiskiminetas rivers. Rentals are available at Saltsburg Kayak & Canoe Outfitters, the River’s Edge Canoe & Kayak and Yellow Creek Rental & Supply. Looking to hit the trails? Indiana County is home to 69 miles of rails-to-trails, including the Ghost Town Trail and the Hoodlebug Trail. Additional trails such as the Blairsville Riverfront Trail and West Penn Trail also provide exciting outdoor adventures! If you prefer off-road biking fun, Yellow Creek State Park also offers off-road biking trails and hosts thrilling bike races too. Enjoy beautiful views on your next golfing adventure at Chestnut Ridge Golf Resort and Conference Center or Meadow Lane Golf Course. If you are limited with time, check out the Cherrywood Par 3 Golf Course. If you are looking for a location to ride your ATV/SXS/OHV/Dirt Bike, check out The Lannding which also offers primitive camping and a 40’x80’ tent for your special event. The Pleasure Valley Raceway is a motocross racetrack offering 6 races a year, 36 campsites as well as room for dry camping. The Tri-County ATV Recreation & Rescue Association is a private membership ATV club focused on providing a safe, 24/7 legal riding area for families to enjoy. |
